Mrs. Walthall and Mrs. Carneal (math coach) took a fantastically innovative approach to their math lesson about place value with their Place Value Surgery Day. This room transformation saw the fourth graders at Flat Rock Elementary School don hospital gear and rotate between five math stations. Practical applications included comparing prescriptions and placing the right prescription in the bottle; “dissecting” numbers and breaking them apart in their values; cutting and gluing the standard forms next to the word form to diagnose them correctly; finding out what operating room the patient is closest to; and placing the numbers on the correct place on a diagram of the body.
Mrs. Walthall said she saw the room transformation activity on a teacher page she follows and knew she had to recreate it for her students. “I’m hoping that they are finding a love of math through transformation and real-world experiences,” she said. #wearepcps #teampowhatan #elevateeducatorsva
Through the action of a committed group of youth with disabilities, the General Assembly officially recognized October as Disability History and Awareness Month (DHAM). The youth also developed this credo: Disability history education and awareness will promote positive attitudes in schools creating a culture of mutual respect, understanding, and equal opportunities for all.
This month highlights the success that Virginians with disabilities have had reducing barriers they have faced to employment, healthcare, education and community living, while helping raise awareness of the ongoing contributions and achievements that they bring to the Commonwealth throughout the year.

R is for Robots! When the letter of the day for the kindergarten classes at Powhatan Elementary was R, the students got a special treat with a visit and demonstration from the Richmond Police Department’s Bomb Squad. The technicians used age appropriate language to show the kids how they operate the bomb robot but also let the students tour the heavy response vehicle and see their own Mrs. Hall don a bomb suit. Pocahontas Elementary administration and school counselors recently welcomed over 60 father figures and their children to a Watch D.O.G.S kick-off pizza party. The school is so excited about welcoming these D.O.G.S into the school this year. #wearepcps #teampowhatan
PCPS is looking for community members who are interested in helping us create our next Six-Year Technology Plan. The technology plan will guide us as we purchase, integrate, and support technology over the next six years. The plan provides a roadmap not just for how our technology will support classroom instruction, but also how we can use technology to support internet safety, business operations, and network security. The first meeting will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 17.

Powhatan High School recently held a Club Fair to allow students to learn about all of the wonderful opportunities to get involved in their school and either explore existing or find new interests. Just a reminder to our middle school parents about this event happening today: Powhatan Middle School will host an evening of “Non-traditional High School Options” with representatives from the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies, Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology, Code RVA High School and the Powhatan High School/Reynolds Community College for Advanced College Academy Program on Oct. 9, 2023.
The purpose of this meeting is to provide interested students and their parents with information regarding the curriculum, graduation requirements, extracurricular activities, as well as answer questions regarding the application process for each high school option. Although the application process is open to current eighth grade students, fifth, sixth and seventh grade students and their parents are also invited to attend in order to assist in course planning before they reach the eighth grade.
The evening will kick off with a review of Powhatan County Public Schools’ participation in these schools as well as answer some of the basic questions students and parents have about student participation in these high school program options.
Applications will be available beginning on Oct. 13 from Mrs. Haskins in the Gifted Services office (B210) and Mrs. Baldwin in the school counseling office. Applications will be available to students currently enrolled in Algebra I. Private and homeschool families seeking applications will need to schedule an appointment with Mrs. Haskins to come to Powhatan Middle School, provide proof of residency and pick up an application. Applications cannot be mailed. The deadline for eighth graders to submit an application is Dec. 1, 2023.
Powhatan Elementary School loved inviting families into the school for Family PE Week last week. Parents or guardians got the chance to go through a typical PE class, such as these adults did with the third graders. Coach Daniels said, “It helps them see what their kids are doing so they are seeing their kids be active. Every vote counts! That was the message Powhatan County Director of Elections Karen Alexander tried to drive home when she spoke with the PHS senior class this week. Alexander talked about the importance of young people making their voices heard on issues they care about through voting and walked them through the process to register once they are eligible.
