Mrs. Arnett took her sixth-grade math class at Powhatan Middle School to Dr. Spott’s Innovations Lab to work on a project using integer operations to program robots. The students would solve the problem and then program the Finch Robots 2.0 to check their answers. #wearepcps #teampowhatan #elevateeducatorsva

Charting success! During a collaboration with the Library, Mrs. Vandell's Algebra Functions students at @powhatan_high_school participated in stations focused on slopes, parallel lines, and perpendicular lines. At the Slope and Line Station Activity station, students went into the courtyard to capture photos of perpendicular and parallel lines to analyze shapes in the real world. The iPads the students used to take photos were purchased this school year thanks to the support of a Powhatan Education Foundation Grant that PHS Library Media Specialists Mr. Smartschan and Mrs. Jacobs applied for so they can use them for collaborations. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Mrs. Woodel and Mr. Altizer spent two days in the Powhatan Middle School Innovation Lab with their seventh-grade U.S. History 2 students working in assembly lines making airplanes. The lesson relates to the classes’ study of Henry Ford and his mechanization of the assembly line and the study of the Wright brothers’ success with flight. “It helps them understand your job is important no matter how small,” said Mr. Altizer said. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

When Mrs. Rose’s third graders at Powhatan Elementary came to art class with Mrs. Webster, she had them stretch their imaginations with a clay play day. This first lesson in the class’s clay unit lets the students get reacquainted with clay and experience molding it without worrying about creating a finished product that will be fired in a kiln. The unit continues with the students making a lump bowl. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Powhatan County Public Schools highly recommends that families with smartphones download the free PCPS app and enable notifications. When alerts such as notice of school delays or closings are sent out, the notifications through the app appear to be the one of the fast means of receiving the information. You can sign up for notifications sent to the entire school division as well as only your child's school; see the news feed that mirrors what goes on our social media accounts if you don't use Instagram or Facebook; and see the division and school calendars. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

The small group of students who take Mr. Faria’s Computer Systems 1 class at Powhatan High School get excellent experience to prepare them for potential future careers. As part of the career and workforce development program, students in this class help run the Tech Bar, assisting their peers with Chromebook issues and working with Mr. Faria to address some PHS staff members’ computer problems. Students gain experience working with a variety of devices, such as these two students, who are troubleshooting hard drives and doing a hard drive swap. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Mrs. McArtan’s fifth graders at Flat Rock Elementary School used a special tool to help with their social studies lesson on the causes of the American Revolution. The students created timelines that incorporated coding so Ozobots could then travel the timeline. This was a great collaborative activity. Instructional technology innovator Ms. Bentzen created the lesson for most of the FRES fifth-grade classes to make it different from a standard history lesson, and Mrs. Kilpatrick, K-12 history studies specialist, came to observe the activity and provide content knowledge. Mrs. McArtan said the students were highly engaged in the lesson. “It’s a great way to get back in school after the break, because that’s kind of tough,” she said. #wearepcps #teampowhatan
