Sorry, we couldn’t resist jumping on the trend. School buses are back on the roads in the morning and afternoon, and we want to make sure our students are safe on Powhatan’s gorgeous but sometimes windy roads. So stop; it’s the law! Virginia motorists must: • stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign when approaching from any direction; • remain stopped until everyone is clear and the bus moves again; and • stop whenever the bus is loading or unloading passengers, even if the lights and stop sign are not activated. If a school bus is on the opposite side of a median or barrier, motorists aren’t required to stop; however, drivers should be prepared for students exiting the school bus and crossing into their lanes.

It’s eggs-periment time! It may have been the first week of school, but Ms. Brooks was ready to get her fifth graders excited about science from the get-go. The students soaked eggs in vinegar for two days and then took the new bouncy creations outside to see at what height they would break. This was a great lesson on process skills and matters of observation as well as just a fun and slightly messy time. For those who have never seen this experiment, the calcium carbonate shell undergoes a chemical reaction and dissolves in the vinegar. The acidic vinegar leaves the membrane that lines the inside of the shell intact. Some of the vinegar permeates the membrane due to osmosis, which is why the egg swells. The egg insides remain intact, and the remaining membrane is surprisingly strong and flexible, allowing the egg to bounce if dropped from a small height. What an eggs-cellent experiment! #wearepcps #teampowhatan

📚✨ It was a book-filled adventure in Mrs. Bartholomew’s English 8 class at Powhatan Middle during her annual book pass! Students got to visit tables stacked with different genres, read the summaries on the covers, and rate which ones caught their eye. Mrs. Bartholomew says it’s a wonderful way for them to discover new reads and genres they might not have picked up otherwise. Happy reading! 📖 #wearepcps #teampowhatan

You’ve got to save Fred! This friendly (but not so bright) gummy worm took his boat out on the lake one day and forgot to wear his life preserver. Unfortunately for Fred, a strong wind caused his boat to capsize, leaving him stranded on top and the life preserver underneath. Fortunately, Ms. Duncan’s second graders at Powhatan Elementary are problem solvers, and they worked in groups to come up with a solution to save the gummy worm. Ms. Duncan said this is a great activity for the beginning of the school year, because it focuses on team building, classroom community, problem solving, and communication. After the activity, the groups gathered on the carpet to discuss what they learned and how they managed to save Fred. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

A kraken taking down a ship? A school bus that is also a rocket? A turtle swimming above a swirling cosmos? The talent and imagination of our students is amazing. This recognition is a little overdue, but check out this amazing mural created in the upstairs hallway at the end of the last school year by students at Powhatan Middle School who wanted to leave their mark in a powerful and productive way. Mission accomplished! #wearepcps #teampowhatan

We had a lovely surprise this morning at the Pocahontas Landmark Center when local resident Karla Curtis dropped off the roughly 500 copies of “The Magical Place We Call School: Creating a Safe Space for Learning and Happiness in a Challenging World” that she and her husband, Bob, are gifting to teachers, counselors, and other staff members in our schools. Author Kathleen Corley was the keynote speaker at this summer’s admin training, Curriculum Close-up, and Mrs. Curtis said she hoped the book would help staff in their constant quest to create magical learning experiences for students. Experiences like this show why community engagement and building relationships are such an important part of the work we do at PCPS. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

To ensure that students have a focused and healthier learning environment, Powhatan County Public Schools will implement and enforce the following procedures at all schools. Students who use their electronic devices on school property will be subject to disciplinary consequences, including confiscation of devices. During the Instructional Day, students must keep cell phones and other personal electronic devices turned off and in their backpacks or bags until they exit the building at the end of the Instructional Day. No headphones/earbuds will be worn at school. Headphone/earbud use will only be permitted for specific learning activities as directed by school staff. For instructional purposes, only school-issued electronic devices will be allowed. Parents who need to reach their child during the school day should call the main office. Students who need to reach a parent should ask a staff member and will be able to do so using a school phone. Discipline process First offense - A staff member reminds the student to turn his/her phone off and put it away. Second offense - Staff member confiscates the phone until the end of class and calls the parent before they leave for the day. Third offense - Staff member confiscates the phone and submits an office referral; administrator processes the referral and calls the parent by the end of the day; and parent has to pick up the device.** **In accordance with the Student Rights and Responsibilities, repeated offenses will be viewed as “Failure to Comply” and will carry more significant consequences.
This summer, our PCPS administrators had a spellbinding experience at a professional development day with the amazing Dr. Kathleen Corley, author of “The Magical Place We Call School: Creating a Safe Space for Learning and Happiness in a Challenging World.” ✨ We were beyond excited to have her inspire our staff as they gear up to tackle the challenges and celebrate the magical moments ahead. Thanks to a generous donation from our wonderful local supporters, Bob and Karla Curtis—who’ve already worked their magic by gifting each teacher and counselor $1,000 to use in their classrooms—our staff members will also receive a copy of Dr. Corley’s enchanting book. As we set off on this year’s adventure, we’re ready to conjure up creativity, cast the light of knowledge, and enchant our students with the joy of learning. 📚 #wearepcps #teampowhatan

More than 60 Powhatan High School seniors kicked off their college journey at last week's College Boot Camp! 🎓 Held every August, this student-only event brought in college admissions counselors for a Q&A session where they shared tips on what to do (and what to avoid) when applying to college. This year, we had amazing reps from Liberty University, Old Dominion University, Richard Bland, Brightpoint, and Reynolds. After the Q&A, students got hands-on and set up their Parchment accounts to order transcripts, register for SATs, track NCAA eligibility, and find scholarships. 📚💻 #wearepcps #teampowhatan #CollegeBound @reynoldscommunitycollege @olddominionu @RichardBlandCollege @libertyuniversity @brightpointccva

Powhatan High School was thrilled to celebrate an additional group of graduates joining the school’s Class of 2024 as part of the annual Summer Graduation Ceremony held on Wednesday, July 17. The high school offers a summer graduation ceremony to recognize those students who need a little longer to complete their graduation requirements or who are using the opportunity to complete their studies ahead of schedule. Whatever their reasons, we were proud to see all of these young adults cross the stage to accept their diplomas and turn the page to the next chapter of their lives. Congratulations graduates! #wearepcps #teampowhatan
