Seniors who painted a parking spot at the beginning of the school year are required to paint over their spot prior to graduation. Our “paint-over” day is now scheduled for May 15th . Seniors can paint between the hours of 9am and 2pm on that day. The senior lot will be free of cars so there will be plenty of space to work. Paint supplies will be provided. Seniors will not be permitted to enter the school building on this day so they should plan to leave the premises as soon as they are done painting. If it rains on Thursday, we will move to Friday, May 16th .
Senior Caps and Gowns will be delivered during lunches on Tuesday, April 15th, 2025. If you have not yet ordered your senior’s Cap and Gown, you may do so by contacting our local Herff Jones representative at (804)-598-0971 or emailing at info@hjvirginia.com.
Literacy Resources for Families
Powhatan County Public Schools encourages families to explore the valuable literacy resources available through the Virginia Department of Education. These tools are designed to support student learning and success both in the classroom and at home.
Be sure to visit the "Family Supports for Reading" section in the VDOE Resource Hub, which includes helpful strategies, tips, and fun activities to strengthen reading skills and inspire a love of reading at home.
By working together, we can give every student the tools they need to grow as confident, capable readers.
Vaccinations for Rising Seniors
This is an early reminder to parents regarding vaccination requirements for the next school year (2025-2026 SY). Students who are 16 years old or older must receive their second dose of the MenACWY vaccine before beginning their senior year.
Students who do not provide proof of vaccination will not be allowed to attend school until the necessary documentation is submitted, unless providing a religious exemption. Proof of vaccination should be provided to Nurse Jefferson.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Nurse Jefferson by calling the school at (804) 598-5710 or emailing sarah.jefferson@powhatan.k12.va.us.
Testing
Junior and Senior ASVAB Testing
Powhatan High School will administer the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test to all Junior students this year. Senior students will have the opportunity to take the ASVAB but must opt-in to take the test. The ASVAB helps identify students' strengths and interests to support future career planning in partnership with their families.
The test will be administered by military partners from Ft. Gregg-Adams at Powhatan High School on April 18th, 2025 at 9:00 AM in the Auxiliary Gym.
ASVAB scores will be shared with the military, however, Junior students may choose to opt-out of the test.
If your Junior would like to opt-out or your senior would like to opt-in to the test, please contact Caryn Rehme at caryn.rehme@powhatan.k12.va.us to do so.
Final Exams
The PHS Leadership Team received feedback from parents, teachers, and staff regarding Semester 1 exams. We worked diligently to fine-tune the exam policy and provide all information as soon as possible so students and families could prepare. FAQs for both Senior and Underclassmen exam policies including exam dates, exam blocks, and updated exemption criteria are linked below:
Please note: Students who have already earned a verified credit (passed the SOL and earned a D or better in the course) in a specific subject area will follow non-SOL course exemption criteria for their current course. For example, Skylar is in Chemistry for the 2024-2025 school year and earned a verified credit in Biology last year. Skylar must have 5 or less absences and a B or better in Chemistry to be exempt from her final exam.
From the PHS Clinic
Recommendation: Fever and Vomiting/Diarrhea-Free for 24 hours without medication
With the onset of cold and flu season, we are seeing an increase in related illnesses. While we value and encourage regular attendance, we recommend that students stay home until they have been fever-free for 24 hours without medication and have been free of vomiting or diarrhea for at least 24 hours.
MenACWY Vaccine
This is an early reminder to parents regarding vaccination requirements for the 2025-26 school year (next school year). Students who are 16 years old or older must receive their second dose of the MenACWY vaccine before beginning their senior year.
Please note that the MenB vaccination is not the same as the MenACWY vaccination and therefore will not satisfy this requirement.
Students or families who do not provide proof of vaccination will not be allowed to attend school until the necessary documentation is submitted. Proof of vaccination should be provided to Nurse Jefferson.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Nurse Jefferson by calling the school at (804) 598-5710 or emailing sarah.jefferson@powhatan.k12.va.us
