Literacy Resources for Families
Powhatan County Public Schools encourages families to explore the valuable literacy resources available through the Virginia Department of Education. These tools are designed to support student learning and success both in the classroom and at home.
Be sure to visit the "Family Supports for Reading" section in the VDOE Resource Hub, which includes helpful strategies, tips, and fun activities to strengthen reading skills and inspire a love of reading at home.
By working together, we can give every student the tools they need to grow as confident, capable readers.
Calling all Watch D.O.G.S (dads of great students)!

If you are interested in spending a day as a Pocahontas Watch DOGS volunteer, please complete the background check and return it to your child’s teacher. You will be given access to sign the up calendar as soon as your background check clears.
Powhatan County Housing Needs Survey
Your voice matters! PCPS encourages our staff and families to take the Powhatan County Housing Needs Survey to help guide important decisions for our community—and our schools.
This anonymous survey, led by a local steering committee, will help guide important decisions about housing in Powhatan. As a school division, we know how housing affects PCPS students and families. Your feedback will also help ensure our schools are prepared for the community’s needs.
Virginia Department of Education
The Virginia Department of Education will be holding Mastery Level/Standard Setting to set new cut scores for Math and Reading Standards of Learning Assessments in June and is asking for parent and guardian participation. The Department needs our parents and guardians to bring their unique perspective on their children as students and provide guidance and recommendations for these new, more rigorous cut scores.
All standard setting meetings will be held at the Virginia Crossings Hotel and Conference Center, 1000 Virginia Center Parkway, Glen Allen, VA 20359, on the following dates:
Mathematics: June 9-11
Reading: June 11-13.
Hotel and per diem will be covered by the Virginia Department of Education.
Breakfast and lunch will be served. Additionally, there will be a virtual orientation meeting on May 19, 2025, to familiarize the selected members with the standard setting process. Parents and guardians that are selected to be part of the committee will receive additional information and link for the virtual meeting via email. Deadline to apply: April 24, 2025.
To apply, please complete the Community Member Standards Setting Application.
